At the proposal of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum / Coordinator for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Ministry of Culture inscribed the 124th unit of intangible cultural heritage – Carpentry – into the Register of Intangible Heritage on 24 December 2024. The initiative for inscription into the Register was proposed by the Razvojni center Srca Slovenije, the Dežela kozolcev Šentrupert and by Aljaž Celarc.

Carpentry is a craft and handicraft activity that includes knowledge of wood and tree species, preparation and manual processing of wood for the purpose of manufacturing bonded wooden structures of buildings (e.g. houses, outbuildings, churches) and transport facilities (bridges) and vessels.

There is currently one bearer registered with the unit – Aljaž Celarc.

Aljaž Celarc learned to hew beams with a scythe from Jož Anzeljec from Mali Log in Loški Potok, who was still working as a carpenter in the 1960s. Hew beams with a scythe was an activity that was particularly characteristic of the Loški Potok area. Aljaž Celarc uses this knowledge for home construction today, and also passes it on to interested members of the public at carpentry workshops. Today, he collects carpentry tools and ensures that the heritage of carpentry in this area is not forgotten.

In 2024, 9 new units were inscribed into the Register. The Register currently contains 124 units and 375 registered bearers of intangible cultural heritage.

The next deadline for submitting initiatives for the entry of new units into the Register is 15. 1. 2025, but bearers can submit initiatives at any time during the year. More information can be found at the link.
