Viticulture inscribed into the Register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

On 24 April 2026, at the proposal of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum / Coordinator for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Ministry of Culture inscribed the element Viticulture into the Register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. This is a recognition of the long-standing tradition of grape and wine production, which is deeply rooted in Slovenian territory. The inscription of viticulture into the Register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage will contribute to the safeguarding of this knowledge and practices and encourage their further transmission. The initiative to enter the Viticulture unit, under which three bearers are currently registered (Raka Winegrowers Society, Lisec Dobrnič Winegrowers Society, Grčevje Winegrowers Society), was proposed by Matjaž Pavlin.

Viticulture includes the cultivation of vines, the production and processing of grapes, and winemaking. It marks the landscape, economy, and life of the wine-growing regions of Podravje, Posavje, and Primorska. Despite the challenges, the industry makes a significant contribution to Slovenia's cultural and social identity.
