Maritime Baptism Inscribed in the Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage

On 12 August 2026, following a proposal by the Slovene Ethnographic Museum / Coordinator for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Ministry of Culture inscribed Maritime Baptism in the Register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Register now includes a total of 145 elements and 424 registered bearers of intangible cultural heritage.

Maritime Baptism

The Maritime Baptism is a custom performed upon welcoming a new generation of students to the maritime school. It consists of a series of events (a procession, an oath, and the “initiation” itself) taking place over several days. The custom represents a symbolic acceptance of first‑year students into the school under the protection of the sea god Neptune.

One bearer is registered for this element: Grammar School, Electrical Engineering and Maritime School Piran.

Submission of initiatives

Initiatives to be considered in the next evaluation round may be submitted to the Coordinator for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage by 15 September 2026. Initiatives for the registration of new bearers of elements already inscribed in the Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage may be submitted at any time during the year.
