A new unit – Slovene Braille – has been inscribed into the Register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage upon the proposal of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum / Coordinator for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The initiative for the entry was submitted by the Zveza društev slepih in slabovidnih Slovenije, which is also recorded as the bearer of the unit.
Slovene Braille is a tactile writing system that enables blind and partially sighted individuals to read and write. It is read by touch. It consists of various combinations of raised dots in six- or eight-dot Braille cells, which are used to represent letters, numbers, and symbols.
Currently, 135 units are inscribed in the Register, and 402 bearers of intangible cultural heritage are recorded. Initiatives for consideration in the next round may be submitted to the Coordinator by 15 September 2025.
